Orthodontic treatment offers lots of benefits — during childhood and adulthood. But for your child, orthodontic treatment is a new experience, so it’s natural to be a little anxious about that first visit.

As a leading provider of children’s bracesConstant and Contro Orthodontics in Cupertino, California, takes extra care to ensure our patients are comfortable with our team, our office, and the care we provide beginning with your first consultation.

Here, learn what to expect during your child’s first visit so you can help them prepare.

Introduction and initial discussion

One of the primary goals of the initial appointment is to evaluate your child’s teeth and determine if they need orthodontic treatment — and if so, what type of treatment will benefit them most.

For instance, early interventional strategies like tooth extraction or the use of spacers or expanders, help reduce the amount of time spent in braces or aligners for some kids, while other kids can skip these steps altogether.

The first visit also gives your child a chance to meet our care team so they feel more comfortable during future visits.

Bite assessment

We evaluate your child’s bite pattern. In addition to a visible assessment of your child’s teeth and bite, we evaluate the position and orientation of each tooth and observe how your child’s teeth meet when they bite down.

X-rays or impressions

We take X-rays of your child’s teeth, sometimes accompanied by photographs of their bite. We may also make an impression of your child’s teeth to provide us with a three-dimensional view to help map out their treatment plan.

Review of treatment options

Once the evaluation is complete, we discuss your child’s orthodontic needs and the treatment options that can help them enjoy straighter teeth, a better-aligned bite, a more beautiful smile, and a lifetime of improved oral health. This is also a great time for you and your child to ask questions, especially if your child is feeling nervous about their treatment.

Next steps

Before leaving our office, we let you know what to expect at the next appointment and whether any additional steps are needed to prepare your child, like tooth extraction. We can also provide a rough estimate of treatment time and cost, so you and your child can plan effectively.
