request an appointmentWhat is Botox®?
Botox is an injectable cosmetic that improves the appearance of dynamic wrinkles. Dynamic wrinkles are wrinkles that form due to repetitive facial movements, like smiling, frowning, or squinting.
When Botox enters your body, it stops nerve signals from reaching certain muscles in your face. By blocking the signals, your muscles can relax, reducing the appearance of fine lines and crow’s feet.
Aside from making your skin appear smoother and younger, Botox can reduce the uncomfortable side-effects of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders. Botox causes the muscles in your jaw to relax, relieving pain and tension caused by teeth grinding and jaw clenching.
How do I prepare for Botox?
At Constant and Contro Orthodontics, the team administers Botox on an outpatient basis.
During your initial consultation, let your provider know about any medications, supplements, or vitamins you regularly take. It’s also important to alert them to any allergies or underlying medical conditions you have.
On the day of your appointment, don’t wear any makeup or extra jewelry. The team might also ask you to stop taking blood-thinning medication, like aspirin to minimize the risk of bruising.
What does Botox treatment involve?
At Constant and Contro Orthodontics, Botox treatment is quick and hassle-free. Most people are in and out within 20 minutes or less.
At the beginning of the appointment, your provider cleans your skin and applies a topical anesthetic to minimize any discomfort. Then, they administer a series of between three and five injections between your eyebrows and on the sides of your eyes.
If you’re receiving Botox for TMJ, your provider administers several injections into the temporomandibular joints on either side of your mouth.
Does Botox present side effects?
Botox is safe and usually well-tolerated, but it’s normal to experience some mild swelling and bruising. In the first few days following the appointment, you might also experience:
- Tiredness
- Headache
- Neck pain
- Dry eyes
These symptoms should resolve within two or three days, but if they persist or get worse, contact the team at Constant and Contro Orthodontics right away.
How long does Botox last?
The results that Botox provides usually last three to four months*, but you can extend them by following your provider’s recovery instructions. You’ll know it’s time to schedule a follow-up appointment when wrinkles and fine lines start returning to your face, or you experience jaw pain and stiffness (due to TMJ).
